Diagnosis
Periodontal disease is diagnosed by your dentist or dental hygienist during a periodontal examination. This type of exam should always be part of your regular dental check-up.
A periodontal probe (small dental instrument) is gently used to measure the sulcus (pocket or space) between the tooth and the gums. The depth of a healthy sulcus measures three millimeters or less and does not bleed. The periodontal probe helps indicate if pockets are deeper than three millimeters. As periodontal disease progresses, the pockets usually get deeper.
Your dentist or hygienist will use pocket depths, amount of bleeding, inflammation, tooth mobility, etc., to make a diagnosis that will fall into a category below:
Gingivitis
Gingivitis is the first stage of periodontal disease. Plaque and its toxin by-products irritate the gums, making them tender, inflamed, and likely to bleed.
Periodontitis
Plaque hardens into calculus (tartar). As calculus and plaque continue to build up, the gums begin to recede from the teeth. Deeper pockets form between the gums and teeth and become filled with bacteria and pus. The gums become very irritated, inflamed, and bleed easily. Slight to moderate bone loss may be present.
Advanced Periodontitis
The teeth lose more support as the gums, bone, and periodontal ligament continue to be destroyed. Unless treated, the affected teeth will become very loose and may be lost. Generalized moderate to severe bone loss may be present.

"I've been a patient at Summit Dental for over 40 years and am more than pleased with the up-to-date knowledge and care received here by everyone. They are very accommodating to a patient's schedule and make every effort to make each experience a comfortable one. I highly recommend this office!"
"I just wanted to take the time to thank the fabulous staff you have. From the minute you walk in the door until the time you leave. A little history - I had not been to a dentist in over 15 years because I was petrified, but I knew I had to put on my big girl pants and make an appointment. From the moment I walked through the door I knew I would never be afraid to go to the dentist as long as I was in your hands. Thank you SO MUCH for being the office that you are. You truly make a difference."
"My entire experience was absolutely hands down, the best! The front desk staff was polite, I didn't sit in the waiting room very long, the dental assistant and dentist were outstanding and answered all my questions and provided the best treatment possible, the check out staff was very courteous. I am looking forward to my dental needs being taken care of at this office! Highly recommend."
"Summit Dental Group is great! I found them after my dentist retired during COVID-19. I highly recommend this practice. The people are friendly and the office is very professional."
